Aquitaine is a region in the southwest of France, with its capital at Bordeaux. In the past, however Aquitaine was successively a Roman province, and a duchy. The name, which would mean wetland area and is derived from the Latin aqua (water), changed during the Hundred Years War in Guyenne.
Under the name Guyenne Gascogne it was a French province until the French Revolution. Also a large part of today’s Midi-Pyrenees belonged to that province.
